Church Stained Glass Windows

Church Stained Glass Windows Depicts Christian Faith

As early as the 4th century, churches were already adorned by stained glass windows in which the characters in the Bible embellish the designs and serves as a visual directive for church patrons. Having stained windows is but a part of the church’s custom. All over the world, church stained glass windows often portray the same subjects or themes. Some of the most common themes may include the following:

  • The different symbols of Christ and the Holy Spirit: Instead of illustrating the face of Christ, symbols are used instead. The stained glass crucifix has been recognized as a universal symbol for Christ while the dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit.
  • The lives of the saints: One of the most important character in Christian faith are the saints thus, they are also often used as themes in stained glasses. It is either their face or names that are illustrated.
  • Significant biblical events: These are being used to bring it closer to every parishioner life. It can be both educational and inspirational. Scenes from the Last Supper, Annunciation or Assumption is being depicted
  • Christ’s life: Being portrayed on stained glasses are the birth of Christ, His suffering, death and resurrection. These stages in the life of Christ unite all Christians from all around the world.
  • The twelve apostles: Arty presentation of the Last Supper is the common image shown on windows but there are also some churches wherein the apostles are individually described.
  • The Virgin Mary: She is often illustrated wearing blue robes, either alone or with Christ.

Even though themes are common for most churches, it does not automatically means that they are totally alike. Different artists have their own way of presenting the themes.

Stained glass windows in church have diverse colors that radiate beauty. The soft ones produce a calming effect to church goers while the transparent and opaque colors were thoroughly chosen to emphasize the tale being told. Church patrons often experienced comfort and peace while inside the church because the light coming through the church windows have a soothing effect. The design scenes illustrated on the windows provide an inspiration to live a better life while strengthening faith.

Over the decades, stained glass windows need repair and restoration due to bulging caused by expansion and reduction brought about by the changes in temperature. The lead content can also cause cracks.

Now, stained glasses are not only exclusive for church windows as even other memorial places like temples; shrine or sanctuary makes use of it.
